Can you get a natural glass cleaner make yourself? We use glass cleaners in our everyday life mainly for cleaning mirrors, windows, car windows or glass stove surfaces. The field of application is versatile, but the selection of natural glass cleaners in the markets is rare. Instead, we only get expensive window cleaners with aggressive, chemical ingredients, packaged in huge plastic bottles. In the sense of the plastic-free lifestyle so this is not either. These means are dangerous not only for the environment, but also for our own health.
In this article of the DIY Household Blogs I would therefore like to present 3 recipes with which you can make your own glass cleaner. From natural ingredients that are environmentally friendly and not hazardous to health. Let's go!

Home remedies for homemade glass cleaner
To be able to make a natural glass and window cleaner yourself, there are many wonderful means that we can use. And some of them you will surely already have at home. The following ingredients and things, you can use for your homemade glass cleaner!
Ingredients for the DIY glass cleaner
These ingredients are perfect for a homemade glass and window cleaner:
- Bio-ethanol / spirit: Alcohol has a grease and dirt dissolving effect and allows no streaks to remain after cleaning the pane.
- Lemon juice: The juice of the citrus fruit has a grease-dissolving effect and makes the glass shine again. To get it, simply squeeze a lemon. The recommended ratio between lemon juice and water is 1:10.
- Lemon or orange peel: The peels of citrus fruits can also be used for DIY glass cleaner.
- Vinegar / apple cider vinegar: Vinegar or apple cider vinegar also have a fat-dissolving, disinfecting and antiseptic effect and can even be used against lime and rust. Here you get Vinegar.
- Baking soda: Sodium hydrogen carbonate has a fungicidal and antibacterial effect when cleaning glass. Depending on the grain size, it can also have an abrasive effect without scratching the glass. - Cornstarch: Food starch also achieves a grease-dissolving effect, which is why this home remedy is ideal for our homemade window cleaner.
- Water: We use plain tap water to find an appropriate ratio for the ingredients and to obtain a larger quantity.
Of course, you don't need all these ingredients. But all of them are basically suitable for homemade glass cleaner.
Things for glass cleaning
To get glass 100% clean and to be able to make the glass cleaner yourself, a few items are necessary. Even though you probably already have some of them at home, I would like to briefly introduce these things to you:
- Cotton cloth: Which cloth you use for wiping is crucial! Therefore, use a soft cloth made of cotton, which does not lint and cleans the disc to 100%. Good Organic cotton wipes you get here*.
- Spray bottle / atomizer: As with a traditional glass cleaner, you will need a container in which to store the homemade glass cleaner and finally spray it on the glass. You can use an old bottle that has been rinsed out for this purpose or you can use a get a glass spray bottle here*.
- Funnel: If you use a spray bottle with a narrow opening, you may need a funnel. For this I can give you such a Stainless steel funnel recommend
- Kitchen grater: For the glass cleaner from citrus peel you still need a kitchen grater. If you don't have one at home yet, you can use a such stainless steel kitchen grater* use.
- Juicer: If you decide to make a homemade glass cleaner from citrus juice, then you will also need a juicer. If you don't have one in the kitchen yet, you can use this one, for example Stainless steel citrus juicer use
- Newsprint: You must have known that fold garbage bags from old newspaper can. It gets even better! Since newsprint is very absorbent and doesn't lint, it's also great for cleaning glass surfaces without streaks. (optional)
That's all you need! Now you can learn how to combine the individual ingredients and items to make great window cleaners or glass cleaners with recipes and instructions.
1. DIY glass cleaner from organic ethanol and apple cider vinegar
Bio-ethanol is an alcohol obtained by fermentation from grain, potatoes and sugar cane. Whether on the glass of the shower cubicle or outside on the window glass - as soon as drops come to the pane, they bead off due to the use of bio-ethanol.
If you want to make your own natural glass cleaner from bio-ethanol, then the following are Ingredients and quantities₁ are recommended:
- 250 ml bio ethanol
- 2-3 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 250 ml water
- Spray bottle

Preparation & application of the glass cleaner
If you want to make your own natural glass cleaner from organic ethanol and apple cider vinegar, you can combine the ingredients as follows:
- Open the spray bottle and attach a filter.
- Now fill all the water, apple cider vinegar and bio-ethanol in the recommended amounts.
- Only close and shake vigorously.
- Use glass cleaner as usual.
Notice: The production of this glass cleaner is also possible at very short notice compared to the glass cleaner made from citrus peel.
2. DIY glass cleaner from lemon peel & vinegar
Did you know that even the "useless-seeming" peels of citrus fruits such as lemons have a cleansing effect? I recommend that you simply grate them down with a fine kitchen grater. In this way, the peels can also be stored longer and even freeze plastic free.
Note: Another advantage is that we do not use citrus fruits in the Worm composter are allowed to dispose of them - great that they can still be used in the household.
Following I would like to give you a small tutorial including the Ingredients₂ for the homemade glass cleaner from lemon peel, vinegar and water to give along. These are the things you need:
- 125 ml cup Vinegar
- peels of lemons (alternatively also from oranges)
- 125 ml cup water
- Spray bottle

Preparation & application of the glass cleaner
To make your own natural glass or window cleaner, simply combine the above ingredients.
- First, put the (grated) peels of the lemon in a glass.
- Then add 125 ml of vinegar and cover the mixture with a cloth.
- After 1-2 weeks of dark storage, you can pour the mixture through a strainer with a stainless steel funnel into the spray bottle.
- Only now add the 125 ml of water.
- After you've securely closed the spray bottle and shaken it through, you're ready to use the homemade glass cleaner.
Tip: Since the production of this glass cleaner takes some time, you can make yourself a larger amount right away.
3. DIY glass cleaner from lemon juice & vinegar
Not only from the peels, but also from the juice of the lemon can make a great glass cleaner itself. And as described above, vinegar also has a grease-dissolving and dirt-cleaning effect. A homemade glass cleaner from both will make your windows shine again.
Here you get of course also all Ingredients and things in the overview that you need for this homemade glass cleaner:
- Juice of one squeezed lemon (1/10 of the water content)
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- Water (9/10 water, 1/10 lemon juice)
- Spray bottle

Preparation & application of the glass cleaner
Making this natural glass cleaner from lemon juice and apple cider vinegar is not complicated either. Just proceed as follows:
- Open a canning jar and put apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and water together.
- Wait five minutes until the ingredients are completely mixed together.
- Now pour the mixture through a funnel into the spray bottle.
- Again, close, shake vigorously and then apply as usual.
Notice: This glass cleaner can also be produced in a short time.
Make glass cleaner yourself - Easy, right?
It's not that complicated to make your own glass and window cleaner, is it? Your Health will thank you! You even save a lot in the long run Money and also lots of Plastic waste with it. Completely in the sense of the Zero Waste Lifestyle so.
I think it's important to make things like this ourselves instead of taking everything we get in the supermarket for granted.
