Here are all the advantages at a glance:
- You have the power over the ingredients and know 100% what is in your scrub
- You can use the best ingredients: e.g. organic fruits, cold pressed oils, Faretrade coffee
- The ingredients can be easily adapted to the needs of your skin
- Your DIY face scrub is guaranteed not to contain Microplastics
- It is always great fun to mix and try new scrubs
Make natural face scrub yourself - The ingredients
There are no limits to your imagination when mixing your natural homemade scrub. Nevertheless, you should adapt the ingredients to the needs of your skin. A scrub consists of a base, which can be one or more ingredients, and an exfoliating ingredient. Here is an overview of possible ingredients and their effects.
The nourishing base ingredients for your natural face scrub
- Olive oil contains many vitamins and ensures re-fatting of the skin. Make sure that you use "extra virgin olive oil" preferably in organic quality. This is cold pressed and gently processed. Olive oil is a super base for dry and normal skin. Virgin olive oil in the bottle is available here.
- Coconut oil moisturizes the skin and contains antimicrobial fatty acids that prevent the proliferation of acne bacteria, for example. Also with coconut oil, you should make sure that it is cold-pressed virgin oil. To use coconut oil in a DIY facial scrub, you need to melt it first. It is particularly suitable for dry, sensitive skin. You can get coconut oil in a reusable jar here.
- Honey has a clarifying and soothing effect. Due to its anti-inflammatory effect, it can counteract skin impurities and the skin becomes fresh and rosy. You should make sure that you buy cold-pressed organic honey. Honey is suitable for all skin types.
- Curd provides the skin with moisture and immediately makes it appear firmer. It has a cooling effect and is therefore very pleasant, especially in summer. Curd is especially good for oily skin. But it can also be used for dry and normal skin.
- Avocado is known to contain quite a lot of fat and also biotin, magnesium, vitamin B6 as well as vitamin E. It replenishes the moisture reservoir of dry skin and makes it supple.
The "peeling" ingredients for your homemade face scrub
- Sugar serves the typical peeling effect. Use raw cane sugar or fine sugar if possible.
- Sea salt is also suitable for your homemade facial scrub. Sea salt also contains valuable minerals and has a disinfecting effect, which makes it especially suitable for impure skin. You should not use salt on sensitive skin. Sea salt in a linen bag you get here.
- Ground coffee is finer than sugar or salt and is therefore also suitable for exfoliation for somewhat more sensitive skin. In addition, coffee promotes blood circulation and thus has a wonderfully invigorating effect. Important: Always use coffee powder that has already been brewed, because this is softer.
- Healing earth absorbs excess sebum and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Since it also has a drying effect, you should not use healing clay on dry skin. Healing clay is suitable for acne and oily skin. Used regularly, it can significantly improve the appearance of the skin. Here you can get healing clay without plastic packaging.
- Oat bran has a moisturizing and soothing effect. Its fine structure makes it well suited for gentle exfoliation of dry and sensitive skin.
- Lemon provides refreshment and a rosy complexion. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect and cleanses deep into the pores. Lemon should not be used on sensitive skin.
- Papaya is an all-round talent. It contains papain, which helps to remove dead skin cells and thoroughly clean pores. Papaya is thus a natural enzyme exfoliator. Papaya also contains vitamin C, which supports collagen production, and the antioxidants beta-carotene and vitamin E, which make the complexion glow.
Make your own natural face scrub - Recipes
To give you some ideas on how to use the above ingredients, I've put together 5 recipes for you. Of course, you can also combine the ingredients differently - just try different recipes until you find your perfect natural face scrub.
#1 Natural Face Scrub DIY for Normal Skin
Need an extra energy boost in the morning? Then try a coffee scrub.
For this you only need 3 teaspoons coffee powder, 1 teaspoon olive oil and if you like some lemon juice.
The coffee powder for your coffee scrub should already have been brewed and for the olive oil, please make sure to use extra virgin olive oil. The lemon should not be used if you have sensitive skin.
Simply mix the ingredients in a bowl and the scrub for soft skin and the extra energy kick is ready.
Application: Moisten face with lukewarm water, because moist skin can absorb the oil much better. Then apply the scrub - avoiding the eye and mouth area as always - , massage, leave on for 5 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
#2 Natural Face Scrub for Dry Skin
Dry skin is usually also somewhat sensitive. Therefore, a combination of moisturizing avocado and the gentle exfoliating effect of oat bran is recommended. For a more pleasant consistency, you can add honey. This also has a soothing effect on the skin.
Detach some pulp from a ripe Avocado, mash it with a fork, add 1 tsp. Oat bran and a little honey added.
Application: You can now apply the homemade scrub to your face. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and then carefully remove it with a lukewarm damp cloth.
#3 Make your own face scrub for oily skin
For your natural face scrub for oily skin you will need 2 tablespoons cottage cheese, 1 teaspoon honey and 1 tablespoon raw cane sugar. Mix the ingredients and then apply them to your face.
After 5 to 10 minutes, remove the peeling with a damp lukewarm cloth. Wash off the residue with lukewarm water.
If you have any of your homemade scrub left over, you can simply eat it up 😉.
#4 Make your own face scrub for sensitive skin
If you have sensitive skin, you should not use abrasive grains. In this case, a peeling based on enzymes is recommended. Papaya contains the enzyme papain and is therefore perfect as a basis for a homemade peeling.
You need 2 tbsp papaya and 1 tbsp honey.
Mash the papaya with a fork and then mix in the honey in a bowl.
You are welcome to eat the leftovers here too 🙂
#5 Quick face scrub with healing clay for blemished skin
Finally, here's a recipe that you can use to make your own facial scrub to combat blemished skin. The ingredients are healing clay and chamomile tea. You need 2 Tbsp. healing clay and about 1 tsp. chamomile teaMix the ingredients together until smooth. If it is too firm overall, simply add a little more tea.
Application: After cleansing and drying your face, apply the mask and let it dry. By drying, the healing clay literally pulls talc and bacteria out of the skin, thus clarifying it. At the same time, chamomile tea soothes your skin. As written above, you should not use healing clay on dry skin. For blemished and oily skin, however, it really is an insider tip.
You can get healing clay for your homemade face scrub here.
Important tips for your homemade face scrub
- Your face scrub should always be freshly mixed and used immediately. Peelings that contain perishable ingredients should never be stored!
- When applying, always make sure to avoid the area around the eyes and mouth.
- If you have sensitive skin or want to be on the safe side, you can test any facial scrub for compatibility on your forearm first.
Have fun trying it out!

Very nice overview. What surprises me, however, is that you show the sugar in plastic packaging. Everywhere you attach great importance to plastic-free, but the sugar, which is available in any supermarket in a Papjer bag, you present in plastic packaging. That doesn't seem very consistent. Otherwise, great article.
