Vegan barbecue without meat? Is that possible at all? I was now vegan barbecue with my family and what we have grilled, I do not want to withhold from you. At the barbecue without meat were my parents, my sister and my grandparents. My grandparents are rather skeptical about my vegan diet, so I was even more pleased that the two were at the vegan barbecue.
Grilling without meat can be totally varied and delicious. With a little creativity and inspiration from the Internet, great vegan barbecue recipes are created. You can grill skewers, steaks and sausages, make salads and dips yourself. You get the full grill pleasure, without meat.
To ensure that you don't miss anything during vegan barbecuing, there are now numerous plant-based convenience products. There are, for example, soy sausages, seitan steaks, tofu burger patties, etc.. Meanwhile, these substitute products are even available in many supermarkets. Here, unfortunately, it often becomes problematic to find plastic-free packaging.
Tip: In the contributions "Vegetarianism Statistics." and "Veganism Statistics" you will find facts and figures about vegan-vegetarian nutrition and its impact.
What can you actually grill vegan?
In principle, you can throw just about anything on the grill. You can make tofu sauce skewers, make your own vegan bacon from eggplant, grill marinated corn on the cob and sweet potato, and then add to that the ever-increasing amount of vegan barbecue products, such as soy sausages, seitan steaks, burger patties made from beans or tofu, etc.. Plus homemade hummus, homemade garlic baguette and salads.
For me, a big serving of grilled vegetables as a side dish is an absolute must when vegan grilling. Just grab your various favorite vegetables, a few herbs of your choice, salt and pepper and cook everything on the grill. Instead of using aluminum foil, you can wrap the veggies in banana or corn leaves. You can find banana leaves in well-stocked fruit and vegetable stores.
As you can see, there is already quite a lot of grilled food together. When grilling without meat, there are no limits to your imagination. My best vegan barbecue recipes I present to you now.
On the road vegan barbecue
If you want to grill vegan on the go and don't want to lug all your silverware to the city park, there are some eco-friendly alternatives.
- Plate: For example, you can use plates made from sugar cane instead of plastic. These are produced from a sustainable raw material and are compostable. You can find the plastic free plates here.
- Mug: Instead of plastic cups, you can use bamboo fiber cups. They are sturdy, dishwasher safe and lightweight, so you can easily take them to the park. You can get the plastic free cups here.
- Forks: Splinter-free disposable forks instead of bending plastic forks is available here.
- Knives: And when it comes to knives, I recommend taking a good one from home. I have not yet found any disposable knives with which I was really satisfied. If you have any ideas, feel free to post them in the comments.
- Container: You can portion out your salad in canning jars and take it to the park. This saves space on the plate for more grilled food and also looks good. You can get canning jars in different sizes here.
- Grill: Instead of a disposable grill, I recommend a grill on wheels. It's not only more environmentally friendly, it also fits more and you can grill longer. And the wheels make it easy to transport. There are also models that can be quickly disassembled or folded, so that the transport becomes even easier.
With the right ideas barbecue without meat can be super environmentally friendly and be waste-reducing.
Preparations for vegan barbecue
As a dip at the vegan barbecue may be Hummus not missing for me. If you don't know hummus yet, you should definitely give it a try. Hummus is a dip from Israel, which consists mainly of Chickpeas is made. I especially like the versions with dried tomatoes or fresh mint. Hummus can be easily prepared and kept fresh in canning jars in the refrigerator for a few days.
Next come the things that need to be marinated. So squeeze the tofu for the skewers, grab two bowls and slice the eggplant. With the eggplant, it's really important to cut thin slices of about 2-4 mm. If you cut the slices too thick, the vegan bacon won't get crispy and if you cut the slices too thin, the vegan bacon will fall apart quickly. For the skewers, I use zucchini, bell bell pepper and onion in addition to tofu. Cut the vegetables into bite-sized pieces so that they fit well on the skewer.
The marinade for the vegan bacon from eggplant consists of:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 heaped teaspoon paprika powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Put the eggplant slices all in the marinade, mix everything well and let the slices stand for 20 minutes.
In the meantime, you can marinate the tofu and vegetables for the skewers. I took smoked tofu, by the way, because it already has a good aroma. Cut the tofu into cubes so that you can skewer it nicely.
The marinade for the tofu consists of:
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 heaped teaspoon paprika powder
- 3 tsp herbs de Provence
- Salt and pepper to taste
Mix everything with the marinade and leave the mixture for about 30 minutes.
Now you can cut the remaining vegetables for the salads and the grilled vegetables and sweet potato. With us there was simply a large mixed salad with spelt sprouts. For me, the base for the grilled vegetables is zucchini, peppers, eggplant, mushrooms and tomatoes, plus a few potatoes and pumpkin depending on the season. My favorite combination of herbs is rosemary and thyme. You should mix about three parts rosemary with one part thyme and add salt and pepper to taste and pack it all in a banana leaf. However, my vegan grill recipes are only rough guidelines. I myself usually season by feel rather than exact amounts. Just vary the recipes according to your taste.
Notice: Unlike meat, vegan treats from the grill contain little Sodium and thus reduce the risk of Hypertension and its secondary diseases.
Vegan barbecue - Let's go
Enough cutting and preparation, now you can start grilling. It's best to start with the eggplants, because they need a little longer. I had the eggplants instead of the grill baked in the oven, because I have pre-cooked in parallel still the sweet potatoes. This takes about 15-20 minutes at 180 degrees. But I think that the vegan bacon becomes even better on the grill, as it takes on the smoky flavor. Just feel your way to the optimal temperature and grilling time.
After a few minutes, the grilled vegetables in the banana leaf can go on the grill and a few more minutes later you can throw the skewers, sweet potato slices, corn on the cob and your vegan sausages and steaks on the grill.
Bon appétit!
The dessert at the vegan barbecue
When everyone is full, we can start with the dessert. My dessert tip: "Grilled Pineapple Mojito". The Grilled Pineapple Mojito is a refreshing cocktail that gets a slightly fruity-exotic note from the pineapple.
For a mojito, you'll need a grilled pineapple slice, a grilled lime, a few mint leaves, some cane sugar, 5 cl of spiced rum and a splash of sparkling water. Grill the pineapple slice and the halved limes until the limes caramelize to a dark brown. Cut the pineapple slice into small pieces. Squeeze the juice of the two lime halves into the glass, add the cane sugar and the pineapple chunks. Lightly squeeze the pineapple pieces with a pestle. Add the mint, rum and ice, stir the whole thing properly and top it with sparkling water. Cheers!
And for those who don't drink alcohol, there are bound to be a few grilled pineapple chunks left over.
Barbecue without meat - No problem!
If you want to grill vegan, you can reduce large amounts of waste. For cooking on the grill, you can use banana leaves instead of aluminum foil. When buying vegetables, look for plastic-free packaging and use a Organic cotton vegetable bag use. When eating, you can use plastic-free plates, cups and cutlery. The only problem is vegan convenience products from the supermarket, because they are often packaged in plastic. If you also want to do without them, you can of course simply make your own burger patties or buy tofu in jar here.
My family was excited about the barbecue. My grandparents, for example, did not know soy sausages and were amazed at the taste. The seitan steaks I bought were also great. However, I could not convince everyone with the grilled sweet potato. Sweet potato is simply a matter of taste. Overall, it tasted good and everyone was full, so the barbecue without meat was a complete success.
I hope you enjoyed the post and I could show you how well you can grill vegan. Just look on the Internet for more vegan barbecue recipes and let yourself be inspired. I wish you a lot of fun with the grill!
