How to buy plastic-free sausage & cheese

The plastic free shopping is becoming a little easier with each new day. Manufacturers & markets are adapting to people's new consumer awareness. The Zero Waste Lifestyle has arrived in society. Yogurt in a glass jar and dispensing with plastic bags at the checkout are part of this and a good start. But even today, sausage and cheese are where you're most likely to run up against your creative limits.

As already described above, however, grandma & grandpa provide the solution to this problem. Earlier the two are namely with a bread box brought to the next market to have food such as sausage and cheese filled there without plastic. Plastic-free, because there is simply no plastic. Plastic gave. So in the future just take your Stainless steel lunch box with you - for example, in your backpack - and have slices of cheese and sausage cut off and packed in them.

The basic procedure

This is how the plastic-free purchase of sausage and cheese ideally proceeds step by step:

  1. Bring your own sealable container
  2. Let the salesperson know at the counter
  3. Place open container on a tray provided
  4. Seller fills in sausage or cheese
  5. You take the can without touching the tray and you're done!

The principle sounds pretty simple, doesn't it? But in fact, it was a real hurdle for a long time. Now, fortunately, it works this way at more and more stores.

And where can you buy sausage & cheese plastic-free?

Not every Supermarket and not every store offers the service of filling sausage and cheese without plastic at the counter. Hygienic reasons are often cited for this - many supermarkets do not even have a fresh food counter. But since the offer is met with great enthusiasm by customers, you will find more and more suppliers in the future who also offer plastic-free products. Avoid plastic waste would like. Because the implementation on site is relatively simple: It only needs a tray so that the sales staff behind the counter do not come into contact with your lunch box. Then it is also harmless from a hygienic point of view. Suggest it in your market if you can't yet buy plastic-free sausage and cheese there. And then, of course, there's the butcher next door, who is certainly a bit more flexible than a large supermarket chain.

If you want to be on the safe side, you have with Organic markets with a counter is certainly the best chance for your project 🙂

Also the Classic weekly market is recommended of course! You can also find it in many smaller towns and usually cheese and sausage is offered at the fresh counter. If you want to buy a Delicatessen around the corner, it also offers you a very good opportunity to get food without plastic.

The best places to go (with fresh food counter) once again in the overview:

  • Supermarkets
  • Organic markets
  • Weekly markets
  • Delicatessens

Supermarket chains like TeGut, for example, already offer this nationwide! Such an offer also has a nice marketing effect 😉

Of course, it's not yet possible everywhere and you may still have to search a bit. But my feeling is that in the future it will be "normal" again to take your own lunch box to the supermarket. Once you've found your ideal place to go near your home, plastic-free shopping for sausage and cheese will quickly become routine. The first few times, you just have to break out of old habits and be open to new things 🙂

  1. Hi Christoph, addition to the list of shopping options: the butcher's store around the corner. You also buy regionally and strengthen local trade 🙂

    1. Hi Annette! Thank you for the input - I'm happy to include it in the article 🙂
      Many greetings,

  2. Hi Christoph,
Thanks for the article. It works quite well here. However, hygienic refrigerator storage for cold cuts is a challenge. Glass or stainless steel boxes that are too tall leave too much air in, so it spoils. Ideas?
    Kind regards,

  3. We are a family of five, the children go to school and my husband and I both work. Every day I make work and school sandwiches for 5 people, and we consume several packages of sausage and cheese every week. Gladly I would buy of course at the sausage counter or at the butcher, it is simply not financially possible for a large family. The industry gives the small purse with it no chance at all.

    1. Hey Jessi! If the meat is so cheap, then it's not healthy either. Then you should switch to plant-based alternatives, e.g. natural spreadable cream. You can also buy plastic-free sausage and cheese at the weekly market. I generally recommend that you reduce your meat consumption a little - it saves money and protects the environment.
      Best regards
      Christoph
