What is a Paleo diet?
But what exactly is meant by the so-called "Stone Age diet" (Paleo diet) and what does it actually do?
As the name suggests, this diet is based on man's original way of eating as a hunter-gatherer. It relies above all on high quality of the consumed products and thus also on sustainability. Foods that were available in the Stone Age and provide our bodies with nutrients naturally and optimally, such as meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
Sugar, cereals and dairy products, as well as vegetable oils and additives are avoided in the Paleo diet, since they were also not present in the Stone Age. It is limited to the basic foods of the first people.
The human body was only later accustomed to the processing of low-quality fats and sugars, and through the Paleo diet is again supplied with the actually easily digestible foods that are healthy and beneficial for him. So the Paleo diet helps to balance the body and stay healthy, vital and slim.
Grains, sugar and co. often have a negative impact on our health and are said to be the main cause for the development of many diseases of civilization. Refined sugars and processed products are probably the main reason for most diseases like diabetes, obesity and autoimmune diseases that humans suffer from today. How does the body react to the Paleo diet?
Our body is already adapted to the foods allowed in the Stone Age diet and thus our organism thanks us with a strengthened immune system. Symptoms of allergies or high blood pressure, as well as diabetes can almost completely disappear, but usually significantly reduced.
Skin problems can also disappear into thin air, since Paleo excludes the consumption of wheat products and sugar. Wheat and also milk, for example, promote the inflammatory foci in our body and therefore also in our skin. Most often, people who eliminate refined sugar from their diet resort to fruit. So if you choose to avoid such foods, you support a healthier complexion. If you then additionally reach for fruits and vegetables instead of sweets, you additionally supply your body with important vitamins and antioxidants that can, for example, refine the pores and prevent wrinkles.
What can you eat on a Paleo diet?
The staples of the Stone Age diet are Meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and fat. Fish, especially fatty fish like wild salmon and mackerel. are important for our body, as they contain omega 3 fatty acids. Also Meat, eggs and offal such as liver and heart are important for the nutrient supply of our body. Here, particular attention should be paid to the origin of the meat in order to have as few additives as possible, or preferably none at all, in the food.
Vegetables such as Carrots, beet, and cabbage and spinach are important for the body and its function. Also Nuts and seeds are great providers of vitamin B and unsaturated fatty acids. Nuts and seeds are very high in energy, so they should also be enjoyed in moderation.
What should you not eat on a Paleo diet?
In the Paleo diet is based on Cereal products, sugar and processed foods and milk waived. Products like Wheat, rye or barley are dropped from the menu, as are all Dairy products.
Ready meals from the refrigerated section, packet soups and of course fast food are definitely not a part of this diet. They are packed with artificial additives, unhealthy fatty acids and hidden sugar, which can harm the body. Sweets are also not found in this diet.
Is the Paleo diet realistic and useful?
Most Paleo experts advise a 30-day acclimatization period to get the body used to the new diet. After this phase, you already notice many changes, such as an improvement in the skin. However, one does not have to follow the diet to 100% and can approach slowly. Nevertheless, it is suggested to follow a Paleo diet plan for the first 30 days and only then gradually reintegrate the "forbidden" foods into the menu.
In this way, you can also determine what your own body needs and what it may not tolerate particularly well, without being aware of it yourself. It is therefore important to observe the body in order to decide what exactly you should do without and what you would perhaps prefer to eat again in the long term.
What are the disadvantages of the Paleo diet?
The Paleo diet contains little or no fiber, which we need for a functioning and healthy digestion. In addition, if you eat only animal protein, your acid-base balance can quickly be affected. Also, researchers say that humans have adapted and can utilize today's foods.
However, most agree that foods of all kinds that are loaded with additives do more harm to the human body than provide it with energy and it is advised, as always, to find a healthy balance for your own organism.
The fact is that the diet promotes a conscious diet, which in turn leads to the fact that we reach less for products from factory farming, but want to know exactly where our food comes from.
Where can you try the Paleo diet?
By the way, Paleo is now so popular that even restaurants with a focus on the "Stone Age diet" have emerged. For example, there is a delicious Paleo restaurant in Hamburg that has dedicated itself entirely to the special diet form. The Paledo in Hamburg offers seasonal, regional and sustainable products, not only in the bistro, but also in their in-house store.
Throughout Germany, many restaurants are now becoming more Paleo-friendly and offer dishes that fit the Stone Age diet menu. In eastern Germany, for example, the Spreegold in Berlin excellent to go out to eat with non-Paleo followers, as the restaurant offers many different options for everyone.
But who also at home likes to have guests and would like to invite to the Paleo breakfast, for which this delicious breakfast is ideal! If you want it less spicy, just omit the chili flakes.
You need:
- 5 eggs
- 100g smoked salmon
- 1 avocado
- Coconut oil
- Chili flakes
Here's how:
- Peel the avocado, remove the pit and dice.
- Crack the eggs in a bowl and whisk.
- Cut the salmon into small pieces and add to the eggs in the bowl.
- Heat the pan, and heat the coconut oil in it. Now you can add the chili flakes to taste.
- Now add the scrambled eggs to the pan on low heat.
- To serve, add the avocado and season with salt and pepper.
